Treatment Options

Detox

The first step of cocaine addiction treatment is to overcome physical dependence on cocaine in preparation for the psychiatric portion of treatment. Detox is the first phase of any addiction treatment program and provides a safe, clean place for patients to cope with physical symptoms of addiction. During cocaine detox, the recovering addict will often deal with a variety of withdrawal symptoms that will mostly go away on their own with time. This process typically takes about 7 days to complete and upon completion, the patient will no longer have a physical drug dependence.

Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies

For the recovering cocaine addict, treatment often includes cognitive or behavioral therapies to assist the addict with learning new ways of coping with addiction, changing their behaviors and altering their thought processes to ensure recovery. Most of the time, behavioral therapy is the primary method of treatment used in cocaine addiction rehab but in cases where thought processes must be altered to provide the patient with an effective recovery solution, then cognitive therapy will also be used. Many treatment specialists choose to incorporate CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) into the overall treatment plan.

Psychiatric Counseling

Substance abuse counselors as well as psychologists provide psychiatric counseling to help those who are addicted to cocaine to get to the root of their problem and to overcome any underlying psychiatric issues that may have caused their drug abuse. Often times, trauma or abuse is the leading cause of cocaine addiction. Psychiatric counseling can help the addict to cope with past physical abuse, sexual abuse or traumatic experiences that caused their addiction. This helps to reduce the risk of future relapse.

Support Groups

Many support groups offer access to the peer support necessary to facilitate recovery from cocaine addiction. Some of the more commonly used support groups that can make recovering from addiction easier include Cocaine Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. Both of these programs offer those who are in recovery the peer support that they need to find strength during difficult times in the recovery process.
